A GAME ABOUT BROTHERS MADE BY BROTHERS

As kids growing up in rainy Oregon, we stayed indoors and played a lot of video games growing up. Not to be too “Pepperidge Farms remembers” about it, but back in the NES and SNES days, my brother and I would go rent the newest game, sit down and take turns playing. “When you die, it’s your brother’s turn” was the law of the land. Almost all adventure games were single player. My brother was way better at platformers than me (still is) and there were games we would rent, where he would hop on and play, beat the game without dying, and I never even took a turn.

Fast forward to a few years ago, Nate taught himself to program, he starts doing some projects and wins a prize at a big local game jam. He tells me “I think I can make a game, and i have an idea” we discuss it. It’s a good idea, it’s clever, familiar, fun, achievable and nostalgic. It’s a love letter to the two of us sitting around the SNES as kids. I go from doing art in the stop motion industry, to doing pixel art. It’s fun, we’re both totally hooked.

A couple years go by of working on the game in our spare time. Nate’s waiting tables, I took a 9-5 job in hospital billing. We’ve been showing REZ PLZ around at shows, even won some awards, people like it, but progress is slow with only our nights available to chip away at it…. Then we lost our mom to cancer.

It was the toughest year of our lives. She was our everything. She was our biggest fan and all she ever wanted for us was to be able to pursue our dreams. Her dying wish was for us to finish the game, we decided quit our day jobs, and went all in on finishing REZ PLZ in her memory and honor.

Making a game has been one of the most challenging things either of us have ever done.  REZ PLZ has had it’s setbacks, frustrations, and uncertainty, but at the end of the day; two brothers got to work on pursuing a childhood dream together. We’re so excited to share REZ PLZ with the world, and we hope you share some of the love and fun we poured into this game for the last five years. We are truly grateful to every single person that’s stopped by our booth, shared our posts, wishlisted our game, or just laughed when they read the title. We sincerely wouldn’t have made it without each and every one of you.

Thank you so much,

-Josh and Nate
